By Kombi through Patagonia: From Comandante Luis Piedra Buena to the Lagoa Azul Volcano | Adventures with MEL 🚐 In this episode of our journey on wheels, we set off in our trusty Kombi called MEL from the city of Comandante Luis Piedra Buena, in the beautiful Argentine Patagonia, towards Río Gallegos to take care of some pending matters of the trip. After that, we continued to one of the most mysterious and isolated places in the region: the base of the Lagoa Azul Volcano, where we spent the night surrounded by wild nature. 🛣️ Comandante Luis Piedra Buena is a quiet city, crossed by the Santa Cruz River, and named after an important Argentine sailor from the 19th century. This river, by the way, is one of the few in Patagonia that flows from west to east, connecting the Andes Mountains to the Atlantic Ocean. The city is a great base for those exploring Route 3, with its wide-ranging landscapes and virtually untouched nature. Heading south, we took the famous Ruta Nacional 3, one of the longest in Argentina, which runs along the entire Atlantic coast to Tierra del Fuego. The route is marked by endless plains, constant wind and that unique feeling of freedom that only those who travel by road feel. The solitude of the landscape is almost mesmerizing — and, even in its simplicity, it reveals the raw power of Patagonia. 📍Río Gallegos, our intermediate point, is the capital of the province of Santa Cruz and also the southernmost city in continental Argentina. Officially founded in 1885, the city has strong ties to the history of Patagonian colonization and sheep farming — which, by the way, is still one of the region's main economic activities. In addition, it has a very harsh climate, known for its strong and constant winds. For those who enjoy history, it is interesting to know that Río Gallegos played a strategic role during the Falkland Islands conflict in 1982. 🌋 After taking care of what we needed to do in the city, we set off for a more isolated and impressive place: the base of the Blue Lagoon Volcano. This extinct volcano is part of a chain of little-explored volcanic formations in southern Argentina. Its name comes from the turquoise lagoon that rests in its crater, a true visual spectacle that seems to have come from another planet. The color of the water is the result of the mineral composition of the rocks and the purity of the waters accumulated over the years. Sleeping there, in absolute silence, surrounded by ancient rock formations and under a clear, starry sky, was one of the most memorable experiences of the trip so far.
