Sri Lanka - Return to Teardrop Island: Part 1
Rajan Datar journeys through Sri Lanka exploring local life and culture from the Western coasts of Sri Lanka to its northernmost city. This year marks twenty years since the Indian Ocean Tsunami hit the nation on Boxing Day in 2004 and, in this first programme, Rajan joins a project that’s on a mission to futureproof coastal communities by replanting coral. In Colombo he gets a guided tour from celebrity actor Nimmi Harasgama, and finds out how the artistic community here reacted during the 2022 protests. Finally, Rajan travels to Yala National Park coming face to face with some of Sri Lanka’s most iconic wildlife and asks how elephants and humans can live side by side. First broadcast Feb 2024
