Prague Metro Evolution (1974 - 2026)

The Prague Metro stands as a testament to 20th-century engineering, celebrated for its unique fusion of striking architecture and deep-level subterranean design. Developed during the height of the Cold War, the network was conceived as an underground monument for the city's residents. Built through demanding geological conditions beneath the Vltava River, engineers utilized specialized tunneling techniques to create a rapid transit system capable of carrying millions through the historic heart of Bohemia. The network's journey began in May 1974 with the inauguration of Line C between Sokolovská and Kačerov, introducing a classic era of heavy-rail transit to the capital. Over the following decades, expansion followed the geopolitical rhythm of the region. Line A arrived in the late 1970s, showcasing its now-iconic aluminum dimple wall panels, while the mid-1980s saw the debut of Line B to form the central transit triangle. The system underwent a profound cultural transformation in 1990: following the Velvet Revolution, a massive wave of renamings swept the network, permanently stripping away Soviet and communist ideology references in favor of more neutral geographic and historical names. Following steady post-communist growth that pushed trackage deep into the outer housing estates, the Prague Metro now operates as a highly mature, three-line system spanning over 65 kilometers. As Prague looks to the future, the network is embarking on its most ambitious chapter yet, with extensive construction underway on the brand-new, fully automated driverless Line D to connect the southern suburbs and expand the city's modern transit system. 0:00 Prague, Czechia 0:12 [1974] Line C opens 0:43 [1978] Line A opens 1:05 [1980] Line C extension to Kosmonautů 1:23 [1980] Line A extension to Želivského 1:37 [1984] Line C extension to Fučíkova 1:51 [1985] Line B opens 2:13 [1987] Line A extension to Strašnická 2:23 [1988] Line B extension to Dukelská 2:37 [1990] Multiple station renaming 2:55 [1990] Lines A and B extension to Skalka and Českomoravská 3:25 [1994] Line B extension to Zličín 3:47 [1998] Line B extension to Černý Most 4:27 [2004] Line C extension to Ládví 4:41 [2006] Line A extension to Depo Hostivař 4:55 [2008] Line C extension to Letňany 5:13 [2015] Line A extension to Nemocnice Motol 5:36 [2026] Current Network 5:48 [Future] Line D 6:34 [Future] Future Network #NodeRail #Prague #PragueMetro #Pid #PragueIntegratedTransport #DPP #Praha #Czechia #czechrepublic #PražskéMetro #Pražské #metro #TransitMaps #UrbanPlanning #TransitMap #transit #DataVisualization #MetroEvolution #AnimatedMap #SubwayHistory #RailwayNetwork
