Evolution of Budapest Metro (1896 - 2026)

Budapest is a legendary city when it comes to transit history, being home to the Millennium Underground, the first electrified underground railway in Continental Europe. This evolution traces the city's journey from 19th-century innovation to a massive Cold War-era expansion and, finally, the high-tech automation of the 21st century. The story begins in 1896 with the iconic Line M1, a shallow-tunnel pioneer built to celebrate Hungary’s 1000th anniversary. After decades of stagnation, the network saw a brutalist rebirth during the 1970s and 80s with the deep-level Lines M2 and M3, designed to withstand the pressures of the era while connecting the massive housing estates of Pest to the historic hills of Buda. The system reaches its modern peak in 2014 with Line M4, a driverless masterpiece of concrete and light that redefined the city's south-western corridor. In this video, we track every map change, station renaming, and network extension from 1896 through to 2026. We explore how Budapest balances its UNESCO World Heritage heritage with the demands of a modern metropolis, managing a network that remains the backbone of one of Central Europe’s most vibrant cities. 0:00 Budapest, Hungary 0:12 [1896] Line M1 Opening 1:27 [1970] Line M2 Opening 1:55 [1972] Line M2 Expansion 2:15 [1973] Line M1 Expansion 2:37 [1976] Line M3 Opening 3:03 [1980] Line M3 Expansions 5:13 [2014] Line M4 Opening 6:20 [2026] Current Network 6:30 [Future] Future Plans #NodeRail #Budapest #BudapestMetro #Budapestimetró #budapesti #hungary #magyarország #metro #TransitMaps #UrbanPlanning #TransitMap #transit #DataVisualization #MetroEvolution #AnimatedMap #SubwayHistory #RailwayNetwork #urbanplanningdesign
