Debrief Science Lessons with Translanguaging Pedagogies

Teachers reflect on students’ science sensemaking after teaching lessons that strategically integrated translanguaging pedagogies. In this video, four science teachers debrief lesson enactment and student work after strategically customizing their lessons to include translanguaging pedagogies to enhance student sensemaking around the NGSS Science and Engineering Practices. Teachers follow a three-part process: 1) carefully review student work with an asset-based lens to focus on what students are doing with language and science, 2) reflect on translanguaging customizations that support student sensemaking, and 3) identify small adjustments to make to translanguaging customizations during upcoming science lessons to further support student sensemaking. This video will support in-service and pre-service teachers, teacher educators, and administrators who would like to see what translanguaging pedagogies can look like in science classrooms. Guiding Questions: The NGSS Science and Engineering Practices require students to argue, model, and analyze. Which of these practices seemed to benefit the most from the teachers' translanguaging customizations, and what was the specific evidence in the student work that proved it? Why is the process of making small instructional adjustments important, and how does it reflect a responsive teaching practice? How might the strategies shown in the video need to be adapted for different classroom contexts (e.g., grade level, language diversity, or content area)?
