Das Universum zeigt in eine Richtung – das ist ein riesiges Problem
Today's standard model of cosmology is based on a central assumption: That the universe is isotropic. That is, it looks the same in all directions on large scales. This is the foundation of all modern cosmology. It's enshrined in the FLRW metric, it's enshrined in the Lambda-CDM model, and it determines how we describe expansion, dark energy, and the evolution of large-scale structures. In short, it's everywhere; the universe is uniform. However, in recent years, several observations have emerged that call precisely this assumption into question. One of the most fundamental is the so-called cosmic dipole anomaly. It describes a large-scale asymmetry in the distribution of matter in the universe that does not match the known dipole structure of the cosmic microwave background radiation. If this deviation is real—and current data strongly suggest it is—then it's not a local measurement problem or a cosmetic discrepancy. The universe is violating one of the fundamental assumptions upon which our cosmological model is built. However, in recent years, several observations have emerged that call this assumption into question. This episode tackles precisely this question: What does it mean for cosmology if the universe isn't uniform on the largest scales – and why this problem goes deeper than the well-known Hubble stress?
