All matter is made up of elementary particles. These are the smallest, indivisible particles in atoms. They are invisible, yet their capabilities are ubiquitous in our lives. Without elementary particles, for example, there would be no X-ray machines, no computed tomography scanners, no internet, and no electricity. Do we already know all the elementary particles? Because some elementary particles can pass through matter without destroying it, they are a boon for scientific and medical applications. They decipher the protein structure of viruses or reveal cavities in the Egyptian pyramids. If researchers at the German Electron Synchrotron (DESY) succeed in sending light particles through matter, this could be proof of a new, previously unknown elementary particle. Why is this important? We still don't know what approximately 85 percent of the matter in the universe is made of. We call it dark matter.
