The Sewing Kit That Solved Problems in the 18th Century
What looks like a simple sewing kit was once considered essential gear in the 18th century. A small tear, a missing button, or a loose seam could quickly turn into a much bigger problem. In this video, I sew together a traditional “housewife” sewing kit using a kit from Frontier Trading Company, with a few personal modifications along the way. Instead of following the directions exactly, I used green wool tape for part of the binding, giving it a more homespun personal feel. These kits weren’t just convenient—they were necessary. Clothing in the 18th century wasn’t easily replaced, and maintaining it was critical to staying warm, dry, and capable in changing conditions. A needle and thread could prevent small issues from becoming serious problems down the road. Join me as I put this kit together by hand and explore why something so simple carried so much importance.
