【戊辰戦争】 もうひとつの悲劇 二本松少年隊
On July 29, 1868 (September 15, 1868 in the Gregorian calendar), Nihonmatsu Castle fell, and the Nihonmatsu Boys' Corps met a tragic end. The Boshin War in Tohoku began with the Battle of Shirakawaguchi in April 1868 (June 1868). The Nihonmatsu Domain committed its main fighting force to the battle at Shirakawa. In addition, the Miharu Domain's submission to the new government forced the remaining forces to further disperse and expand the front line. As a result, only the elderly, children, and women and children were left behind at Nihonmatsu Castle. In this situation, due to a shortage of troops, in early July the domain permitted boys up to the age of 17 to march into battle. Applying the "iri-nen" rule, boys up to the age of 15 were eligible, but they could not march into battle without the domain's permission and assignment to a unit. However, the number of young boys pleading for military service increased day by day, and all of the students of artillery instructor Kimura Juutaro met together and repeatedly begged Juutaro for permission to march. On July 27th, following the occupation of Motomiya, the domain permitted boys up to 15 years old to march, but with the introduction of "iri-noshi," this was extended to up to 13 years old. The lack of military manpower and the custom of tolerating a two-year age difference came crashing down, leading to the departure of young boys into battle and numerous tragedies. Despite the boys' valiant efforts, Nihonmatsu Castle set fire to the castle on July 29th and fell, leading to the Battle of Mother Pass on August 21st (an attack on the Aizu domain). "Iri-noshi" refers to the age at which a boy was considered an adult in the Nihonmatsu domain, when he turned 20 years old according to the Japanese age reckoning system. However, there was a custom of the domain ordering him to enter the military upon turning 18 and reporting his adulthood to the domain. In other words, the practice of reading two-year-old mackerel was tacitly permitted, and this was called "iretoshi" and was a system unique to the Nihonmatsu domain.
