Byblos - From a Fishing Village to a Metropolis and Back, Lebanon | Treasures of the World
Byblos. A magical place that has always provided ideal conditions for civilization between the three thousand meter-high mountains of the Lebanon Mountains, its fertile slopes and the nearby coast. Byblos has been continuously inhabited for over seven thousand years and is one of the oldest cities in the world. Initially, it was only fishermen who went fishing from the small natural harbor, but in the 3rd millennium BC, the village was transformed into a walled city called Gebál. ------- #documentary #unesco #treasuresoftheworld #heritageofmankind #byblos #lebanon ------- Watch all documentaries of the series in our playlist: https://bit.ly/treasures_of_the_world Subscribe to wocomoTRAVEL: https://goo.gl/tIk2Qc Follow us on Facebook: / wocomo ------- The nearby Lebanon Mountains are covered with cedar forests that have become legendary. The Egyptian pharaohs needed the valuable wood to build their fleets and construct the pyramids. The Egyptians paid with Nubian gold, valuable fabrics and papyrus. Gebál became the richest and most famous metropolis of the era. Immigrant Greeks later replaced the old city name with Byblos - the Greek word for paper/book - and called the province Phoenicia. Contracts were concluded and embassies sent for business transactions. Papyrus and commercial activity formed the basis for the invention of the first alphabet of 22 characters. Byblos became the birthplace of writing. In addition to the enormous trading activity, Byblos developed into a cultural and spiritual center. Numerous temples were built. For example, the Obelisk Temple was built in the first third of the 2nd millennium BC during the Bronze Age. The Egyptian rule perished in the movements of nations. The Assyrians, the Persians, the Greeks under Alexander the Great and the Romans under Pompey invaded the Phoenician land. They all left their mark on the site of the ancient city of Byblos, which continued to rise on the walls of its history and grew into a stone hill on the coast. Byblos perished after the crusaders. The metropolis, which in the city's 'golden age' could only be compared to New York, London or Paris, once again became a fisherman's nest at the foot of the Lebanon Mountains. UNESCO has been protecting the world's most valuable natural and cultural monuments as the "Heritage of Humanity" since 1972. The television series “Treasures of the World” tells of these places in impressive images. © Licensed by Telepool ------- A channel for travelers, tourists and backpackers and all those who want to inform themselves about foreign countries and cultures.
