Essential Tremor vs Parkinson’s Disease Explained
Most tremor is not Parkinson's. Essential tremor is more common. When your hand shakes is what tells the diagnosis. This video is for anyone whose hand has started to shake and who has wondered if they are heading toward Parkinson's. It is for anyone who has watched a parent live with that disease and is now noticing their own hands. Most tremor is not Parkinson's. And the pattern of when it happens is what tells you which kind it is. We walk through what tremor actually is, the three patterns that distinguish the different types (REST tremor when the hand sits still, ACTION tremor when you reach or hold, INTENTION tremor that worsens as you approach a target), essential tremor as the most common cause and what makes it different from Parkinson's, Parkinson's tremor and the other signs that almost always accompany it, the five other categories worth knowing (drug-induced, metabolic, cerebellar, functional, Wilson's disease), how a neurologist tells the types apart in the room, and treatment options that depend on the type. We close with the five red flags that should accelerate the evaluation: sudden onset, rapid progression, other neurological signs, younger patient, and severe disability. Most tremor is treatable. Some is reversible. Knowing which kind you have is what changes what happens next. A note on this content. The Healthy Mind is a place for medical education, not medical advice. Watching this channel does not create a doctor-patient relationship. If something in this video resonates with you, that recognition is meaningful. The next step is a conversation with your own physician, who knows your full clinical history and can address your specific situation. No video can substitute for the care of someone who has examined you. Patient examples shared on this channel are composites or representative clinical patterns; identifying details have been changed. If you are experiencing a medical emergency, call 911 or your local emergency services immediately. - Dr. Steven Resnick 🔗 Connect with Dr. Steven Resnick: 🌐 Website: https://drstevenresnick.com/ 📸 Instagram: / dr.stevenresnick 🎧 Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/3B4yD7x...
