In Mashike, we visit Kunimare Sake Brewery, a historic brewery founded in 1882. We explore the traditional interior, learn about the brewing water, and try several different kinds of sake, including sparkling sake, brewery-limited Junmai Daiginjo, and sake-based plum liqueur. After leaving Kunimare, we walk around the old Mashike Station before continuing north toward Rumoi. We arrive at Golden Cape just in time to catch the sunset over the Sea of Japan, then head to Roadside Station Rumoi for our first night in the campervan. For dinner, we prepare fresh mantis shrimp that we bought earlier in Atsuta. We also try Kunimare’s new sake-lees craft beer and sake-lees ice cream before calling it a night. Mashike turned out to be one of the most memorable stops of our Northern Hokkaido journey.
