Smoke Dance Hand Drum Contest | Seminole Pow Wow 2026

After an exciting weekend at the Seminole Pow Wow, I can honestly say that one of my favorite parts of the entire event was the Smoke Dancers. Coming from the Southwest, I don’t get to see Smoke Dance at all. I love seeing the differences between our Southwestern tribes and our Northeastern relatives — the music, the movement, and the overall style feel completely different, but just as powerful. During most Smoke Dance sessions, I’m locked in on the dancers — their fast footwork, timing, and control. But during this hand drum contest, I finally slowed down and focused on the singers. I’m really glad I was able to capture both the dancers and the singers during this event! Thank you for watching and supporting the work I do. Ahe’hee’ 🪶 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- About Smoke Dancers (Quick Background) Smoke Dance comes from Haudenosaunee (Iroquois) Nations of the Northeast, including: •Seneca •Mohawk •Onondaga •Oneida •Cayuga •Tuscarora It’s considered a social dance, but it’s one of the most athletic styles you’ll see at a pow wow. Smoke Dance songs are short, fast, and intense, which pushes dancers to show speed, balance, and endurance. The goal isn’t just flash — it’s control, precision, and staying on beat from start to finish. Smoke Dance is often described as: Fast-paced Energetic Competitive but respectful Closely tied to the singers About the Hand Drums Used Smoke Dance is traditionally accompanied by a hand drum, not large pow wow drums. Key details: •Usually tightly stretched hand drums •Played while standing, not seated •Songs are short and quick, matching the dancers’ pace •Singers must stay extremely tight together rhythmically Unlike big pow wow drums where power and volume carry the song, Smoke Dance hand drums rely on speed, timing, and precision. Every beat matters, and dancers respond immediately to changes in tempo or accents from the singers.
