A man and his dog, riding a 125cc scooter (Suzuki UE125), traveled through the Hexi Corridor and finally arrived at Yiwu County, Hami City, Xinjiang. Today, we set off from Dunhuang, one of the four prefectures of Hexi, and made a spontaneous decision to change our plans and take the highway. We rode 520 kilometers all the way to Yiwu County at the northern foot of the Tianshan Mountains. It was my first time riding a motorcycle on the highway. Midway, the auxiliary fuel tank malfunctioned, and I almost ran out of gas while riding on the highway. After reaching the Xingxingxia Service Area, I analyzed the cause of the fuel gauge issue and the connection principle between the main and auxiliary fuel tanks. We passed multiple toll stations without being charged, only needing to show our ID cards at the Xingxingxia Checkpoint. In the afternoon, the fuel tank acted up again. We pulled over at a rest area, dismantled the luggage, and manually transferred fuel from the auxiliary tank to the main tank using a fuel hose. By 9 p.m., when we reached the last service area, Xiamaya Service Area, we realized there were no gas stations for dozens of kilometers after exiting the highway. So, we had to dismantle the luggage and refuel again—a series of twists and turns, with the luggage taken apart three times in one day. Finally, at 10 p.m., we exited the highway. The gap next to the toll gate barrier was too narrow for the motorcycle to pass through, and we were charged 48 yuan. After exiting the highway, we rode dozens of kilometers on an unlit national road before finally arriving at Yiwu County. Yiwu was pleasantly cool. We camped overnight next to a tank and even received an oversized chicken leg from a kind local in Xinjiang. Riding a heavily loaded 125cc scooter on the highway is extremely dangerous. I stayed fully focused and mentally alert throughout the journey. The 12-hour, 520-kilometer ride was exhausting—once on the highway, you can’t stop, and if anything goes wrong, you can only wait for rescue. The vast Gobi desert along the way was scorching hot under the intense sun. The entire ride felt like a dream. If I had to do it again, I would never take the highway. That day, two serious accidents occurred near Xingxingxia. Small-displacement motorcycles are particularly dangerous on the highway because overtaking is extremely difficult, and being constantly overtaken by large trucks is risky.
