Our journey begins in the first half of the 19th century, when farmers and cattle ranchers began to occupy the fertile lands of the region, initiating the formation of a new community in the interior of Paraíba. According to historical tradition, one of the most important figures in this process was Manoel da Costa Travasso, who received authorization to explore the area, established residence there, and developed activities related to agriculture and livestock. Over the years, the population grew, and a chapel dedicated to Our Lady of the Conception was built. Around it, the village was born that would later give rise to the city we know today. But the history of Riachão do Bacamarte is even older. The region is home to important archaeological sites known as itacoatiaras, rock inscriptions left by the indigenous peoples who inhabited these lands long before the arrival of the colonizers. These records represent one of the greatest historical and cultural heritages of the municipality. For many years, Riachão do Bacamarte remained a district belonging to the municipality of Ingá. In 1938, the locality officially adopted the name it retains to this day: Riachão do Bacamarte. The long-awaited political emancipation arrived on April 29, 1994, through State Law number 5,920, when the municipality separated from Ingá. The official installation took place on January 1, 1997. A curious fact marked this trajectory. In 1996, the municipality was even named Assis Chateaubriand. However, the change was short-lived, and in May 1997, the population recovered its historical identity, re-establishing the name Riachão do Bacamarte. Today, the city preserves its rural traditions, its religiosity, and its valuable cultural heritage. Its economy remains strongly linked to agriculture, livestock, and public services, keeping alive the roots that helped build its history. Riachão do Bacamarte is an example of how a small municipality can preserve a great legacy, uniting the memory of the first settlers with the marks left by the original peoples who passed through this land.
