But if this happens close to the end of the book, I'll likely be vague about mentioning the disability representation.] — ABOUT THE BOOK "Legendborn" by Tracy Deonn is a young adult contemporary fantasy drawing off of Arthurian legend with a romance subplot. While burying her grief for her mother’s recent passing, Bree attends an early college class program at UNC-Chapel Hill. After witnessing a magical monster attack on campus, she discovers a secret society of fighters descended from the King Arthur knights of legend. She joins the society for answers about her mother’s death, but the approaching war against the dark monsters forces her to consider whether she really wants to entangle herself in this world of oaths, bonds, and blood. Representation notes: Bree being Black in a predominantly white, affluent, and bigoted secret society spotlights a lot of racist structures and microaggressions. There are moments that remind the reader that even people trying to not be racist can still be racist. Bree’s best friend is East Asian American. There are Welsh phrases and vocabulary in the book.
