How to Draw a Foal | Shapes, Gesture & Water-Soluble Graphite (Part 1)

Today I’m sketching and beginning a grayscale study of a foal using simple shapes, gesture drawing, and a General’s water-soluble graphite pencil on watercolor paper. Foals can be surprisingly difficult to draw because their proportions are very different from adult horses. In this lesson, I focus on simplifying the form, adjusting movement and proportion, and slowly building the drawing before adding watercolor in Part 2. In this video we explore: • foal proportions • gesture and movement • drawing loosely with shapes • observational sketching • grayscale shading • using water-soluble graphite with water • soft washes This is Part 1 of the process where we create the drawing foundation and begin developing value and depth. ➡️ In Part 2, I’ll continue developing the foal using watercolor washes and additional grayscale layers to bring the drawing further to life. Drawing doesn’t have to feel rigid or perfect. Sometimes the most important thing is learning to observe, simplify, and allow the drawing to develop gradually. Thank you for drawing with me today.
