Bangladesh’s duck industry is entering a new era of protection and innovation. For the first time in the country’s history, researchers at Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU) have developed two breakthrough duck plague vaccines—live attenuated and inactivated. Led by Professor Dr. Md. Bahanur Rahman, the research team worked under the Livestock and Dairy Development Project to create low-cost, locally produced vaccines that can save thousands of ducks from a deadly DNA virus responsible for up to 100% mortality in some areas. The live attenuated vaccine ensures long-term immunity, while the inactivated version provides strong short-term protection—offering new hope for marginal farmers, especially in Haor regions where duck farming is a lifeline.
