The center has been set up to house approximately 200 people evacuated due to the wildfires. There, they met with the evacuated residents, expressed their support for the displaced families, and thanked the volunteers assisting with relief and assistance efforts. The King and Queen were accompanied by the President of the Community of Madrid, Isabel Díaz Ayuso; the Third Vice President of the Government and Minister for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge, Sara Aagesen; the Commanding General of the Military Emergency Unit (UME), Francisco Javier Marcos; and the Mayor of Villamanta, Mariano Núñez. At the Villamanta sports center, the King and Queen spoke with volunteers, emergency and assistance teams, and families and residents evacuated from various towns due to the threat of wildfires. Upon leaving the center, His Majesty the King explained that with this visit they wanted to “show our affection, support, understanding, and solidarity to all those displaced, to all those evacuated. They have suffered greatly. Some have been away from their homes for four days now.” King Felipe noted that “some have lost many belongings. Collectively, we have lost an incalculable amount of natural heritage, and there is still a great deal of risk.” In his remarks, the King made sure to “express his gratitude for the offer, availability, and help of so many residents who have shown solidarity, but also, of course, for the professional work of all the emergency services, starting with the UME (Military Emergency Unit), which is in charge of the operation, but also including civil protection, firefighters, municipal police, the National Police, the Civil Guard—all the resources, men and women deployed, thousands of them, doing a spectacular, professional, dedicated, and arduous job, which deserves our gratitude and praise.” His Majesty the King also emphasized the importance of “providing assurance that all possible resources, both human and material, are being used to mitigate this situation and fight the main enemy, which is the wildfires. The primary objective, as you know, is to preserve human life and guarantee safety.” Her Majesty the Queen, for her part, declared that “it is important and makes sense to listen carefully to the residents, to hear how they feel and how they recount their experience of being abruptly forced to leave their homes, how they felt, the sadness they describe, the anguish, the uncertainty, and those questions that linger in the air. When will I return? What will my house be like? What will I find? And above all, the question of what needs to be done to prevent this from happening again.
