#8 GR-11 SENDA PIRENAICA: Ochagavía-Isaba | NAVARRA

This stage crosses large Scots pine forests interspersed with beech groves on the way to Isaba, in the Roncal Valley. Most of the route follows easy forest tracks, taking a shortcut from the start in Ochagavía along a more direct and steeper path marked as GR-11 (beware of some tracks that direct you along switchbacks of the old forest track). There are great views of the highest mountains in the Navarrese Pyrenees, on the border with France and Aragon. No villages are passed through on the route, so be sure to carry plenty of water, as there are no water sources. At a bend in the track, we will turn off along a ridge to descend through a splendid beech forest to reach Isaba, passing first by the 16th-century Sanctuary of Our Lady of Idoia, nestled in a stunning setting. A Stations of the Cross path under hazel trees will lead us to the road, at a bridge over the Esca River, just outside Isaba. A long but easy stage. Second part of my project to complete the entire GR-11 route from Cape Higuer to Cape Creus, traversing the entire Pyrenees mountain range, in the coming years.
