#40 GR-11 SENDA PIRENAICA: La Jonquera-Espolla | GIRONA

This stage skirts the Sierra de Albera, one of the last Pyrenean foothills before reaching the Mediterranean Sea. It boasts a rich forest, including stands of small beech groves, the easternmost on the Iberian Peninsula. The initial climb from La Jonquera takes us to an altitude of 700 meters over a couple of passes, between which we must cross the Requesens estate, where some GR11 guides end the previous stage. I preferred to descend to Espolla, from where a recently marked variant allows you to finish the stage and rejoin the original GR11 route in Vilamaniscle. The vineyards of the Empordà Designation of Origin grow at the bottom of the valley, and the Mediterranean Sea is already visible on the horizon. We will finally see it in the next stage.
