Welbeck Colliery, located in Meden Vale, Nottinghamshire, was a deep coal mine that operated from 1912 to 2010 after almost 100 Years . It was a significant employer in the area, reaching a peak of 1,400 miners and an annual output of 1.5 million tons. The colliery closed due to limited reserves . Establishment and Early Years: Welbeck Colliery was established in 1912, with two shafts sunk between 1912 and 1915. Working Seams: Three main seams were worked throughout the colliery's history: the Top Hard seam (1915-1992), the Parkgate seam (1992 onwards), and the Deep Soft seam (initially worked 1985-1995, then reopened by UK Coal in 2005 and worked until closure). Ownership Changes: After the National Coal Board dissolved, Welbeck was operated by UK Coal. Closure: In 2007, UK Coal identified limited reserves and announced the colliery's closure. Welbeck produced a European record output on 31st March 1991, with 43,711 tonnes from 211s Parkgate advancing face at 2.2m thick. Dosco SL120 Roadheaders were used in both gates. A champagne breakfast was held to celebrate the event. For the second year in succession over 1.5m tonnes were produced with 1,504,800 tonnes. Final Coal Production: The last coal was produced on May 11, 2010. Demolition: The headstocks were demolished in April 2011. Legacy: Welbeck Colliery was one of the last deep mines in Britain and its closure marked the end of a significant era for the local community.
