The Big Story (1957) — The Make Believe Bandit | The Toy Gun Case

In the early days of radio and television, The Big Story stood apart as a crime drama rooted in real journalism—bringing to life the true investigations of newspaper reporters across the United States. First broadcast on NBC radio in 1947 and later adapted for television (1949–1957), each episode dramatized an actual case, with the reporter credited and appearing on-screen to close the story. In this episode, “The Make Believe Bandit,” reporter Emil Slaboda of The Trentonian uncovers a troubling pattern involving realistic toy guns used in robberies. But as the story unfolds, it becomes something far more personal. Danny Logan, a former Navy man struggling to adjust to civilian life after a medical discharge, finds himself unable to hold a job and desperate to maintain respect in his home. Living a life built on appearances, he is pushed toward a dangerous decision—one that blurs the line between illusion and reality. Hosted by Burgess Meredith, this episode captures the essence of The Big Story—where real events, real people, and real consequences come together in a powerful dramatization of truth. Preserved within the Moviecraft Inc. archive on 16mm film, one of the largest collections of historic film and early television in the United States.
