The Jan Clayton Show — "Miss Bishop" (1961) | Rare Unsold TV Pilot

The Jan Clayton Show is a rare unsold and unaired television pilot from 1961, and one of three pilots developed for Jan Clayton after her departure from Lassie. Starring Clayton as Lorie Bishop, the proposed series was built around a dedicated college instructor inspired by Bess Streeter Aldrich’s classic novel Cheers for Miss Bishop. In the pilot episode, “Miss Bishop,” Lorie Bishop returns to campus at the start of a new academic year, only to face a life-changing choice. A sudden marriage proposal offers romance and adventure overseas, but leaving would mean walking away from the students, colleagues, memories, and traditions that have shaped her life. What begins as a charming campus story becomes a warm and thoughtful portrait of a teacher discovering where she truly belongs. Directed by Jerry Hopper, written by Howard Rodman, and produced by Samuel Marx for Woodmere Productions, the pilot features Jan Clayton, Tom Helmore, Mabel Albertson, Edmund Baylies, Ingrid Lothigius, Vaughn Taylor, Julie Payne, Carol Byron, Tommy Ivo, Richard Tyler, Glenn Rothenberg, and Ralph Reed. Music is by George Greeley. This project has also been associated with the titles Miss Bishop and New Bishop, but the surviving 16mm print carries the on-screen title The Jan Clayton Show. Preserved on 16mm film in the Moviecraft Inc. archive, one of the largest collections of historic film and early television in the United States.
