[Yama-chan's Western Goods Paradise] ※ 03:08 There is a typo in the caption. × California's state song ⚪︎ California's state flower Episode 4/Searching for "emotional" prestigious Western goods stores in Yokohama Motomachi Shopping Street Today, "Yama-chan's Western Goods Paradise" has come to Yokohama, the "holy land of Western goods," in the style of Mitsuhiko Asami! The city of Yokohama is an indispensable part of the history of Western goods. This is because this city is the place where full-scale trade with foreign countries began with the "Treaty of Amity and Commerce between the United States and Japan" concluded in 1858, and it is also the land that was seized by the Allied forces for several years after World War II. Until trade by air transport became established, the center of Western goods and fashion was not Tokyo, but Yokohama! For this reason, various Western goods stores have been established in Yokohama since the Meiji era, but only a few of them remain today. One of them is "The Poppy", which has a store in Motomachi Shopping Arcade, which has its roots in the foreign settlement. It was founded in 1881. That's way before the Constitution of the Empire of Japan was even promulgated! Our reporters were welcomed by CEO Toshiaki Oda. He's a relative of the founding family, and between you and me, there's a rumor that the Odas are descendants of a superstar from the Warring States period... We entered the store, feeling the sweet aroma of the Meiji era from the stately Spanish-style storefront, but were shocked when we were told, "Actually, this store was rebuilt in the 1980s." If you think about it, it's obvious, but the store has such a dignified presence that it's easy to get the wrong idea. They must have been incredibly profitable. To give a brief history of this shop, Oda Shoten was founded in Kanazawa during the Meiji period and exported high-end pottery to foreigners at the time. After World War II, it opened a men's clothing store under the name "The Poppy" in Motomachi. It has long reigned as a famous store supported by stars and cultural figures such as Yukio Mishima, Ken Takakura, and Aritsugu Tokudaiji. During that time, it also rode the Ivy League and trad boom, but as you can see from the store's appearance, this was originally a very high-end men's clothing store. For young people, it was a store that was "high-threshold". However! It would be a shame to not go for that reason. Because even in today's world where the prices of imported goods have skyrocketed, "The Poppy" stubbornly continues to operate with the prices set decades ago, and is like a conscientious local Chinese restaurant. It's a hidden gem, and we need to protect it! For example, the store's famous neckties, loved by Japan's leading gentlemen, are only 5,500 to 10,000 yen! Of course, there is no cutting corners. The pure British striped and paisley ties are made with a thin core, and when tied, they are first-class products that can be tied neatly in one go. The natural shoulder blazer is made three-dimensional with a thick wool core around the chest, making it a masterpiece that can be worn in the most obvious places. It has a strong British aesthetic rather than the so-called Ivy League style. By the way, the sleeves have two buttons, which is the style of "The Poppy". And finally, the dress shirts. Here, the simple lineup of only Brooks-style button-down shirts and regular collar shirts shows the aesthetic of "The Poppy". In fact, there used to be a craftsman stationed on the second floor of the store, and he handmade custom-made shirts. This is the same style as "Charbet" and "Arnis"! Looking at the products of "The Poppy" in this way, some people may think, "They're so ordinary!" I am one of them, and I didn't notice its appeal until a while ago when I was into the so-called Classico Italiano style. In that style, monochrome is boring, sleeve buttons should be real cuffs and ideally hand-sewn, and regular collar shirts are out of the question! However, for some reason, I now feel a deep charm and freshness in this ordinaryness. Is it proof of my maturity, that I can now enjoy simple soy sauce ramen over elaborate creative ramen, and plain udon over udon with various toppings...? I will gratefully copy the famous quote left by Oda's predecessor, "Individuality does not come from trends"...no, I will engrave it in my heart! Now, The Poppy has a lot of fresh basic wardrobe items for not only older men but also young people who like traditional styles, but due to the domestic manufacturing environment where small batch production is difficult, new products are not constantly arriving. Please support us so that this store can continue to exist!
