Congratulations to our readers celebrating the feast day of the Holy Great Martyr and Victorious George today! On December 3, 2019, a major exhibition opened at the State Hermitage Museum, dedicated to the 250th anniversary of the Order of St. George. The highest military award of the Russian Empire was established by Empress Catherine II on November 26, 1769 (December 9, New Style), the feast day of the Holy Great Martyr and Victorious George. Nearly four hundred exhibits are on display in the St. George Hall, dedicated to the saint. They help trace the history of the order from the mid-18th century to the present day. The preparation of this exhibition, the most iconic exhibits, and why Saint George is so important to the Hermitage are discussed by: Georgy Vadimovich Vilinbakhov, Deputy General Director for Research at the State Hermitage Museum, State Herald Master of the Russian Federation, scientific consultant, and co-author of the exhibition concept; Lydia Igorevna Dobrovolskaya, co-author of the exhibition concept, curator, and head of the European and American Numismatic Monuments Sector.
