The Cultural Gospel of Approval, A Study in Galatians 1-2

Jesus did not come to make us popular. He came to make us free. As we learn to root our identity in God's love rather than the approval of others, we discover the courage to live faithfully, speak truthfully, and follow Christ wherever He leads. What if one of the most powerful forces shaping your life isn't God's voice—but the opinions of other people? Our culture teaches us that approval is everything. From social media and friend groups to family expectations and professional success, we're constantly being told that our value depends on being accepted, admired, and liked. The message is simple: If enough people approve of you, you'll be okay. But the Apostle Paul exposes a different reality. In Galatians, Paul confronts the subtle but powerful influence of people-pleasing and asks a challenging question: "Am I now seeking the approval of man, or of God?" He argues that living for human approval and living as a servant of Christ are ultimately moving in different directions. Through the story of Peter's compromise in Antioch, we see how fear of rejection, loss of status, and social pressure can lead even mature believers away from obedience and gospel-centered living. In this message, we'll explore the spiritual danger of approval-seeking, the difference between peacemaking and peacekeeping, and how Jesus modeled a life of freedom by remaining faithful to the Father's voice—even when it led to misunderstanding, criticism, and rejection.
