#ptramnarayan #raagbhairavi #bhairavthaat #sarangirecital Pandit Ram Narayan (25 December 1927 – 9 November 2024) was one of the greatest exponents of the sarangi and is widely regarded as the artist who established the instrument as a respected solo concert instrument in Hindustani classical music. Born in Udaipur, Rajasthan, he displayed exceptional musical talent from an early age and received rigorous training under renowned gurus, mastering the rich and expressive tradition of the sarangi. During the early years of his career, Pandit Ram Narayan worked extensively as an accompanist to many legendary vocalists. Through his extraordinary artistry, he demonstrated that the sarangi possessed the depth, range, and emotional expression required for solo performance. His pioneering efforts transformed the status of the instrument and inspired generations of musicians around the world. Pandit Ram Narayan performed at prestigious music festivals and concert halls across India, Europe, North America, and many other countries. His performances were admired for their purity of raga, lyrical expression, technical brilliance, and profound emotional depth. His distinctive style combined impeccable technique with a deeply meditative and soulful musical approach. Over the course of his remarkable career, he received numerous national and international honours, including the **** and the ****, in recognition of his outstanding contribution to Indian classical music. Pandit Ram Narayan's legacy continues through his disciples, recordings, and the countless musicians he inspired. He is remembered not only as a legendary performer but also as a visionary who elevated the sarangi to international prominence, leaving an enduring mark on the history of Hindustani classical music. Raag Bhairavi is one of the most celebrated and emotionally expressive ragas in Hindustani classical music. It belongs to the Bhairavi Thaat and is traditionally performed in the early morning, especially at the conclusion of an all-night classical music concert. In modern concert practice, however, it is often presented at the end of performances regardless of the time, owing to its universal appeal. Raag Bhairavi is known for its devotional, serene, compassionate, and deeply emotional character. It is capable of expressing a wide range of moods, including devotion (bhakti), love (shringara), pathos (karuna), and peaceful reflection (shanta). Its rich melodic structure makes it equally suitable for khayal, thumri, dadra, bhajan, ghazal, and instrumental music. The raga uses all four flat (komal) notes—Re, Ga, Dha, and Ni—while Ma and Pa remain natural (shuddha). The basic scale is: Aroha (Ascent): Sa Re♭ Ga♭ Ma Pa Dha♭ Ni♭ Sa' Avaroha (Descent): Sa' Ni♭ Dha♭ Pa Ma Ga♭ Re♭ Sa In performance, musicians often employ graceful ornamentation and expressive phrases. In lighter forms such as thumri and bhajan, occasional use of additional natural (shuddha) notes may be heard, adding further colour and flexibility to the raga. Raag Bhairavi has inspired countless masterpieces by legendary vocalists and instrumentalists and remains one of the most beloved ragas in Indian classical music. Its profound emotional depth, melodic beauty, and spiritual resonance continue to captivate audiences across generations, making it a timeless jewel of the Hindustani classical tradition.    / siddhantnahar
