The Prime Minister has announced that the Council of Ministers will approve the withdrawal of the Grand Cross of the Civil Order of Health, awarded during the Franco regime to psychiatrist Antonio Vallejo-Nájera, next Tuesday. Pedro Sánchez argued that a democracy cannot continue to honor someone who used science to justify hatred, repression, and inequality. Vallejo-Nájera espoused pseudoscientific theories according to which Marxism was a mental defect that degraded the race. During the Civil War and the early years of the dictatorship, the Franco regime allowed him to conduct psychological research on political prisoners and women who had suffered reprisals, with the aim of supporting his claims about the supposed moral and ideological inferiority of Republican sympathizers.
