The Mossos d'Esquadra (Catalan police) have arrested a man for his alleged involvement in the forest fire in the Baix Empordà region. According to the Catalan police, all indications point to the fire having started while work was being carried out with an angle grinder on the shoulder of a road, work that has now been suspended due to the high fire risk. The flames, fanned by the wind, have already ravaged some 1,280 hectares and have confined nearly 50,000 residents of seven municipalities due to the intense smoke. More than 200 firefighters with 69 crews, 13 of them aerial, are participating in the firefighting efforts, and the arrival of a new battalion from the Military Emergency Unit (UME) is expected. Authorities have asked those who planned to spend the weekend in the area not to travel there to facilitate the operation. In addition, one campsite remains under lockdown as a precaution, while another, with approximately 80 children, has been evacuated along with about 100 residents to a pavilion in Santa Cristina d'Aro.
