Previously, the Army also delegated some command responsibilities for weapons platoons to NCOs. The problem is the fact that there is also a shortage of non-commissioned officers (NCOs). Last year alone, 1,100 sergeants and nearly 800 staff sergeants were discharged before reaching the mandatory retirement age. This reality is worse than that of the Japanese Self-Defense Forces. In the case of general officer candidates, who start as enlisted personnel and advance to the NCO rank, the number of applicants has rebounded for the first time in five years.
