The Underground Railroad in Ohio played a pivotal role in safely transporting fugitive slaves to freedom. It is estimated that more than 1,000 slaves annually found their freedom through the efforts of Ohioans. Many of the slaves were guided safely through such towns as Fredericksburg, Apple Creek, East Union, Smithville, Congress, West Salem, Shreve, Millbrook, Wooster, Orrville, Marshallville, and Dalton.
