STRAIGHT OUTTA FAIRFORD! TWO ROCKIN' ELLSWORTH AFB B-1 LANCER LONG-RANGE HEAVY BOMBER TAKEOFF

Two Ellsworth AFB Rockwell B-1B Lancer Long-range heavy bombers rumble RAF Faiford on departure. This is just one of those aircraft that just hit the spot, literally! It has a phenomenal combat range and yet can go supersonic. It can even pack a payload more than Mike Tyson. It has a few extra details, such as the 67 degree sweeping wings, little foreplane style whiskers and those four powerful General Electric Engines are afterburner turbofan madness. Back in the days, the B-1 started as the B-1A, initially developed in the 70s as a replacement for the B-52. Fair play, the B-52 is still going and still smokin'. Four prototypes of this long-range, high speed (Mach 2.2) strategic bomber were developed and tested in the mid-1970s, but the program was canceled in 1977 before going into production. Flight testing continued through 1981 and what we have here is now the B-1B, a new improved version. Increased payload to 74,000lbs, improved radar and they even managed to reduce the RCS (Radar Cross Section), giving it more stealthy appearance. Inlets were also changed and improved and to assist the lower RCS, the max speed was reduced to Mach 1.2. The first production B-1 flew in October 1984, and the first B-1B was delivered to Dyess Air Force Base, Texas, in June 1985. This one has 'WA' tail markings originate this B-1 to Nellis AFB. Initial operational capability was achieved on Oct. 1, 1986. The final B-1B was delivered May 2, 1988.
