Exploring THE CAMBRIAN HERITAGE RAILWAY! Class 73 73129 in action, impressive museum & MUCH MORE!
After a week exploring Welsh Heritage Railways, we edge just across the border on English soil to Shropshire, and to a brand new line for me, and a very pleasant visit to the Cambrian Heritage Railway! This railway has some very interesting rolling stock, and lots of potential, and we begin at Weston Wharf on Saturday evening, where the ex Northern Pacer 144007 was in action running a dedicated service to enable people to get to the Stonehouse Brewery and restaurant located next door! The next day we return for a ride on the heritage diesel train, which went out with Ruston Diesel Shunter 11517 ‘Alun Evans’ before upon arriving at Oswestry, handing over to resident Class 73129. As there’s no run round currently at Oswestry, some complicated shunting manoeuvres were undertaken to get the 73 back on the service for each train here! Oswestry was once a proud railway town. The railway station was on the mainline of the Cambrian Railway and, at one stage, it housed the headquarters of the Cambrian Railways Company. Unfortunately, it was a victim of the Beeching cuts, but one side of the grand station building remains, an impressive piece of architecture at the heart of this railway. The museum at Oswestry was an Aladdin’s cave of railway artefacts and history, with an astounding collection of railwayana on display and we also see the site of the former GWR station, now The Range Superstore, and the former Cambrian Railway Company works building now repurposed as a Community Health Centre, as well as the remains of the listed footbridge which once used to span over a dozen tracks! Llangollens Steam locomotive 'Austin No.1' was on loan and in the shed being steam tested ahead of running in conjunction with the forthcoming beer festival. This was a great line with a lot of potential, and from speaking to volunteers during my visit, they have had challenges when looking to extend from two major road crossings either side of where they could run to, but feasibility is being reviewed so see if they can work around these key roads either side of the current limits, either towards Gobowen or beyond Weston Wharf, which could allow exciting extensions in the future. This line is a gem, well worth a visit and one to watch! | 28 - 29.06.2025 I hope you enjoy this video and thank you for watching!
