And the amusement park's sole purpose, according to its charter, is to make Gothenburg more attractive – not to generate profit. With around three million visitors a year, Liseberg is Sweden's most visited tourist destination and one of Scandinavia's largest amusement parks. The park boasts seven roller coasters, including Balder – one of the best wooden roller coasters in the world – and Helix, a multi-launch coaster built directly into the mountain on Liseberg's grounds. All this on land bordered on all sides by the city, leaving little room for expansion. But how does Liseberg actually invest when no investor is expecting a return on investment? Whether it's the wooden roller coaster Balder, which brought the park international fame in 2003, the 240 million kroner roller coaster Helix, or the Grand Curiosa Hotel, which opened in 2023 as part of a 2.5 billion kroner anniversary project—all these are new attractions that could be built in any other amusement park. However, Liseberg's investment decisions are fundamentally different from those of any privately owned amusement park.
