The first written mention of a local settlement dates back to 900. Industrial production of salt (white gold) was carried out at this site. Salt was produced here until 1959. Since the 19th century the city has become a resort, and in 1887 the first resort cooling tower was built. In 1854 Nauheim received city status. Among the city's attractions, one can note the resort complex in the form of an ancient German castle, built by the architect Erst.
