Currently, Jukdo is home to only one household. The couple, Kim Yu-gon and Lee Yun-jeong, and their 3-year-old son, Min-jun, are the only residents. The island has been left in a mess due to the storm warnings issued for several days. That is why Mr. Yu-gon says he is frantically busy after the rain. Today feels unusually short; he has to tend to the food market and vegetable gardens damaged by the wind and rain, clean the solar panels that supply electricity for their self-sufficient island life, and inspect the most precious element: the water reservoir. This summer, Mr. Yu-gon is busy tending to his wild ginseng field. This deodeok farming is what his parents, who crossed over from Ulleungdo to Jukdo 60 years ago, cultivated with their blood and sweat. Mr. Yu-gon, who followed in their footsteps, has spent his youth here as well. Deodeok from Jukdo (Ulleungdo) is popular because it is soft and moist, lacking a tough core. However, sales channels have been blocked as ferry services have been suspended due to the aftermath of COVID-19. But Mr. Yu-gon is not one to simply sit around worrying. He harvests the deodeok he has carefully cultivated for eight years and takes care of his family's health by preparing chicken soup, deodeok rice, and seasoned deodeok.
