Zamboanga City Travel Guide — From Fort Pilar to Alavar Seafood

Zamboanga is the Philippines' most underrated destination — and after this trip, one of our favorites. Asia's Latin City delivers on every front: colonial history, magnificent mosques, incredible seafood, and a sunset ritual the locals will tell you is the best in the world. We start downtown at Pershing Square and Rizal Square, then work our way through Magay Market, Fort Pilar and the Shrine of Nuestra Señora del Pilar, the bird sanctuary, and two mosques that couldn't look more different — the Sadik Grand Mosque, the largest in the Philippines, and the Masjid Al-Islamia, known as the Rainbow Mosque. We stop at Yakan Village for some of the best weaving in the country, and we close the night at Alavar Seafood Restaurant with curacha in their legendary Alavar sauce. Along the way we practice some Chabacano. The sunset at RT Lim Boulevard is the golden finish.
