Why 42,000 U S Bridges Are Quietly Failing While Looking Perfectly Fine
Some bridges don't warn you before they fail — the danger hides inside sealed joints and steel you can't see from the road. Here's how America built the greatest road network in history and quietly mortgaged its future to do it. As of 2024, 42,067 U.S. bridges are rated structurally deficient — most of them small, local, and rural. Drivers cross them about 168.5 million times a day. But the more unsettling problem lives on the marquee interstates that still pass inspection and look perfectly fine — right up until a routine check finds a crack that shouldn't be there. In 2021, an inspection team on the Hernando de Soto Bridge outside Memphis found a fracture running through much of a main tension member and called 911 within hours. Only later did a review of archived drone footage reveal the crack had already been recorded — in plain view — during a 2019 inspection. A photo from 2016 suggests it may have been there for years. This is the story of why our strongest spans age faster than anyone planned, and why the system that built them was never designed to keep them standing.
