India Built a Railway Taller Than the Eiffel Tower (And It’s Terrifying)
In 2008, a committee of India's own senior engineers refused to endorse the safety of this bridge. India built it anyway. 359 metres above the Chenab River, on rock so broken that nobody could tell the engineers what was underneath it, 37 km from a militarised border, in India's highest earthquake zone — the Chenab Rail Bridge is the highest railway bridge in the world. This is the full engineering story: 1,315 metres end to end. A 467-metre steel arch with nothing beneath it. 28,660 tonnes of steel. 600,000 bolts, every one torque-checked. A cable crane strung 900 metres across a gorge because no crane could stand in it. Hidden cavities that made every calculation obsolete the moment a machine broke into them. A geotechnical consultant who spent seventeen years redrawing the same foundation because the mountain kept changing its mind. And an argument that was never fully settled.
