First Introductions to sheep… We believe that the more that a puppy is handled and gets to experience, the more balanced it becomes. Don’t think that you will spoil a pup for work by having fun with it as part of your family. You can achieve lots during foundation training before you ever take your pup to sheep. Good manners, sit, lie down and a recall will all help you build a bond with your youngster and get them used to listening to you. Every dog is different, we usually let our pups see sheep anywhere from 4 months old but formal training won’t start until they are 6 months to a year depending on the pup. Don’t be too worried how they start, as long as they are not being too crazy or hurting your sheep, a bit of wool pulling, tail in the air or lack of interest does not mean they will not end up a fine dog. The first sessions are all about keenness…if you get this right, you will lay a great foundation for when you start to add structure. Use a long line, it will help you keep control and catch up your pup at the end of the session… Keep it short, keep it fun… Look after your sheep… Don’t expect too much in the beginning, it is unlikely that your pup will stop or recall at this early stage… If you have more than one youngster, take them to sheep one at a time. Avoid tight corners, it can lead to confrontation or undesired behaviour at this early stage. Light, well dogged sheep will make everything easier. Avoid anything confrontational or sour.
