Troy-Bilt TB30R Won’t Steer? Common Easy Fix For Stripped Steering

In this video at Raley’s Small Engines, we’re working on a Troy-Bilt TB30R rear engine riding mower with a very common steering problem. When you turn the steering wheel, it just clicks and the front wheels won’t turn. On this mower, the steering gear / steering assembly is worn out and stripped, so we’re replacing the steering service kit and showing how it all comes apart and goes back together. This is a common issue on Troy-Bilt TB30R rear engine mowers and similar MTD-style 30 inch rear engine riders. Some Craftsman, Cub Cadet, MTD, Yard Machines, and other rear engine mower models may use a similar setup, but always verify your exact model and serial number before ordering parts. In the video, I show: • The steering wheel clicking problem • Why the front wheels won’t turn • How to remove the cowling / plastic cover around the steering wheel • How to access the steering gear assembly • How the stripped steering gear fails • How to install the replacement steering assembly • How to get the mower steering again This repair looks worse than it is. If your Troy-Bilt TB30R won’t steer, clicks when turning the wheel, or the steering feels stripped, this may be the fix you need.
