How a Lungi-Wearing Villager Built Zoho and Took on Google
In Silicon Valley, the world's biggest technology companies operate from glass towers with billion-dollar campuses. The founders who built them pose for magazine covers in tailored suits. There are venture capital rounds, investor dinners, and IPO announcements. This is what building a global software empire is supposed to look like. Sridhar Vembu built one of the most profitable software companies in the world from a village in Tamil Nadu. He does it in a lungi. He has never taken a rupee of outside funding. And he is not interested in changing any of that. What you'll find out in this episode: → The beginning. Sridhar Vembu grew up in a middle-class Tamil family where education was the only path that was ever discussed. He studied at IIT Madras, completed a PhD at Princeton, and took a job at Qualcomm in California — the kind of trajectory that leads most Indian engineers in Silicon Valley to stay there for life. He came back. In 1996, with his brothers and a small team, Vembu co-founded a company called AdventNet in Chennai. The plan was enterprise software: business tools for companies that needed to manage their customers, their accounts, and their teams. → The bootstrapped bet. From day one, Vembu and his co-founders refused venture capital. They built Zoho on revenue — charging customers for software, reinvesting the profit, building more software. No funding rounds. No investor pressure to grow at any cost. No IPO timeline. This model is rare in the technology industry, where VC backing is treated as almost mandatory for scale. Zoho proved it is not. The company is profitable, privately held, and in no hurry to answer to anyone but its customers. → What Zoho built. Over nearly three decades, AdventNet became Zoho Corporation, and Zoho became one of the world's most complete enterprise software suites — more than fifty-five applications covering CRM, email, accounting, project management, HR, and collaboration. Zoho CRM competes directly with Salesforce. Zoho Workplace competes with Google Workspace and Microsoft 365. The company's ManageEngine division powers IT management for businesses across the world. Zoho has crossed a billion dollars in annual revenue, with a valuation in the ₹50,000 crore range. All of it bootstrapped. → The village model. Vembu's most radical idea was not what Zoho built — it was how Zoho hired. Zoho University, later expanded to Zoho Schools, trains young people from rural Tamil Nadu who do not have engineering degrees and would otherwise never have had access to a technology career. Vembu believes that talent is distributed far more evenly than opportunity, and built an entire hiring pipeline to capture it from villages. He also moved his own base to Tenkasi in rural Tamil Nadu and set up operations there. He works in a lungi because that is what is comfortable. He believes the future of Indian technology should be built in Indian villages, not imported from foreign campuses. → 2025 and Arattai. In 2025, Zoho's chat application Arattai launched as a swadeshi alternative to WhatsApp. Vembu has been a consistent public voice for Indian data sovereignty — the idea that Indian users' data should not live on American servers, analysed by American algorithms, and governed by American laws. Arattai is the product version of that argument, and it found a ready audience in India's rising Atmanirbhar wave. Vembu has stepped back from the CEO role to focus on research, artificial intelligence, and rural development, but he remains the defining voice behind Zoho's direction. The company he built from a Chennai apartment on zero outside funding is now a global force that the biggest players in enterprise software have to take seriously.
