West Java Governor Dedi Mulyadi denied the statement by social media activist Permadi Arya, also known as Abu Janda, who called West Java a barbaric province because many of its residents lack tolerance. According to him, the label of intolerance does not reflect the true social conditions of West Javanese society. The people of West Java, Dedi Mulyadi said, have long lived in an atmosphere of tolerance and openness. Therefore, it is inappropriate to attach a negative image to Indonesia's most populous province. "I always see it, we respond to everything that develops maturely. Today I emphasize that West Javanese have long been tolerant. West Javanese have always been tolerant," Dedi said on Tuesday (June 2, 2026). Several incidents often associated with the issue of intolerance cannot be used as a basis for judging the character of West Javanese society as a whole. Dedi believes that the root of the problems in these cases is often triggered by misunderstandings in communication. "If there are conflicts of intolerance, they are mostly caused by one thing: miscommunication. Second, the perpetrators of intolerance are usually not native West Javanese," he said. Dedi said that the various conflicts that have arisen so far have often occurred in urban communities and involved immigrant groups interacting in urban areas. Dedi also claimed that social conditions in West Java are currently increasingly conducive. Potential frictions that previously attracted public attention have actually continued to decline. "Since I took over the leadership, things have subsided. It's even more subdued. God willing, West Java is an open province. Let's put it this way: when we talk about West Java's openness, which province is as open as West Java?" he said. According to Dedi, West Java's openness is reflected in the high mobility of residents from various regions who choose to live and work in the region. People from diverse ethnicities, cultures, and backgrounds are said to be able to coexist comfortably. "So, there's no such thing as barbaric for West Java. The proof is West Java; everyone can live here and feel comfortable," he said. Dedi also stated that ethnic conflicts are almost unheard of in West Java. He believes that social life in the community is harmonious and relatively conducive. He said that the occasional issues that arise in the public sphere are mostly related to places of worship. However, he believes these issues can be resolved through dialogue and a deliberative approach. "Usually, the focus is on conflicts over places of worship. Conflicts over places of worship can be resolved through a harmonious approach," he said. Dedi emphasized that various social issues must be resolved through good communication and prioritizing togetherness so that West Java remains a comfortable home for all residents, regardless of background or beliefs. Previously, Abu Janda's statement calling West Java and West Sumatra barbaric regions sparked controversy.
