Consuming an isotonic sports drink while exercising provides energy and hydration during long workouts to maximize endurance performance, particularly in running, cycling, triathlon, or trail running. As an athlete, it's easy to make your own homemade isotonic energy drink with simple and inexpensive ingredients. It will be just as effective as commercially available sports drinks, which are often relatively expensive. An isotonic drink is a beverage containing a concentration of carbohydrates and electrolytes (mineral salts) similar to the concentration of fluids in our body (blood plasma). This concentration allows for optimal hydration because the fluids consumed during exercise are then very well absorbed by the body. Isotonic sports drinks generally contain: Carbohydrates (between 6 and 8 g per 100 ml) to provide energy to working muscles. Mineral salts: such as sodium, potassium, and chloride, to replace losses caused by perspiration. Water: to hydrate the body. Thus, a standard-sized bottle or flask (500 ml) of isotonic drink contains between 30 and 40 g of carbohydrates and 0.5 to 1.5 g of salt.
