Wandiligong – 1. GOLD RUSH Awakens
A Tour of the Mines - Wandiligong Filmed in 2006, one of the more slightly polished Heritage Rat documentaries! Crudely written by a young Andrew Swift & excellently captured on film by Sean King. The Land Rover manages to get the team to the remote corners of the mountains above the township and explore sites, mines and relics not seen since the last miners left them in place. Setting the scene: Wandiligong today is a picturesque mountain village but hidden behind the lacey curtains and pretty buildings lies a once thriving industrial landscape – a landscape that was built on GOLD!!!! In this first episode heritage rat explores the rapid transition from alluvial gold diggings to a booming quartz reef mining township. A landscape transformed on the back of a “Quartz Madness!”. Screeching steam whistles and pounding stamp batteries were an important and vibrant part of the town’s foundations.
