Upcycling clothes is not just about saving money; it’s also about the joy of creativity and caring for your home. When we give old items a second life, they stop being “unwanted” and become useful again. Many of us have clothes that no longer fit or are out of style: a stretched-out sweatshirt, a cardigan that’s gone out of fashion, or other garments. It feels wasteful to throw them away, but you don’t want to wear them either. These items can be altered, mixed and matched, or repurposed for the home. They can be turned into pillows, blankets, baskets, pot holders, covers, and much more. For example, it’s quite doable to sew a comfortable seat pad for a stool out of an old sweatshirt or cardigan. It’s simple enough even for beginners. First, I laid the cardigan flat on the table, smoothing out all wrinkles. Then I took the stool and placed it upside down against the back of the cardigan, with the round part facing down. I traced the circle with chalk and cut out the piece, leaving about a 2 cm seam allowance. Next, using the same circle, I cut a piece of batting for softness and a backing piece from any suitable fabric. After that, I cut a piece of elastic. I divided the circle into diamond shapes and quilted all three layers at once: the top, the batting, and the backing. The quilting not only decorates the piece but also makes it more durable. Then I joined the elastic into a loop and stitched it to the main piece. To ensure everything was even and the elastic lay flat without twisting, I made four evenly spaced marks on both the circle and the elastic. I matched the marks and only then sewed the elastic around the edge. In the end, when you put the seat pad on the stool, the elastic pulls it snugly from underneath, preventing it from slipping or twisting. The pad fits tightly, looks neat, and makes the stool much cozier. These kinds of upcycling projects are not only practical but also inspiring. They teach careful use of belongings, spark imagination, and fill the home with warmth. Sometimes one old cardigan can be the start of a big creative journey and provide plenty of ideas for new transformations.
