Mercedes-Benz LP: os primeiros de cabine avançada da marca!
Journey through the complete history of the first national medium-duty cab-over truck and the pioneering heavy-duty Mercedes trucks in Brazil! Discover the trucks that helped solidify the brand's image in the 1960s and accelerated the dieselization of the national fleet, in a market led by Chevrolet and Ford, mainly with gasoline models. After the introduction of the venerable L-312 in 1956 – the first produced under the Federal Government's National Manufacturing Plan, and the pioneering national diesel truck – Mercedes prepared to consolidate its growth in the Brazilian market. Introduced in 1958, the LP-321 not only carried the laurels of being the first national medium-duty truck with a forward-control cab, combined with the novelty of diesel in a non-existent category, but also represented the first Mercedes produced on a large scale in the country. Between 1958 and 1964, the LP 321 was the backbone of the São Bernardo do Campo factory, definitively placing the brand among the leaders in the sector. With an OM-321 indirect injection diesel engine producing 110 hp, a 5-speed synchronized gearbox, and a single-reduction rear axle, the LP-321 competed in the 10 to 11-ton GVW range. Produced from 1960 onwards, the Mercedes LAP-321 was the first national truck with all-wheel drive, designed to replace the World War II trucks still in use by the Armed Forces. Another important historical milestone for the LP! In 1970, the LP-321 was discontinued with great success, with more than 34,000 units produced, leaving the stage clear for the new L-1113 (the brand's first direct injection truck) to achieve unprecedented success, leading Mercedes to the leadership of the national truck market. Following the medium-duty LP-321, 1958 was also marked by the introduction of the brand's first heavy-duty truck, the LP-331, designed to compete with the then-leader, the FNM D-11000, and the newcomer Scania-Vabis L75. Designed for up to 32 combined tons, the LP-331 featured a 10.8-liter OM-326 engine with up to 180 hp, a 6-speed unsynchronized ZF transmission, and a one- or two-speed rear axle. In 1967, the LP-331 ceased production to make way for the new LP-1520, a modernized version better prepared to challenge the competition. The model offered the first factory-installed 6x2 and 6x4 configurations, and a total combined weight of up to 40 tons, powered by the OM-326 engine, with up to 185 hp (204 hp gross). Although the heavy-duty LP trucks never achieved the expected success, always ranking third in sales behind FNM and Scania, these models paved the way for the launch of the LS-1519 in 1976. This LS-1519 was a highly successful tractor unit that led Mercedes to the top of the heavy-duty segment for the first time in its history, between 1978 and 1981.
