Jenevora’s Running Commentary Episode 2: Positivity and Learning (Why Happy Brains Learn Faster)

Jenevora’s Running Commentary Episode 2: Positivity and learning Why does being happy and positive help us learn better? There is a lot of research showing that singing can increase feelings of wellbeing. In this episode I’m exploring what that positive state does in the brain, including the role of neurotransmitters such as dopamine and serotonin. When more neurotransmitters are available, messages can travel more efficiently between nerve cells, which supports faster learning. For teachers, this has practical implications. When there is genuine empathy between teacher and student, learning improves. The language we choose matters too. Positive instruction gives the brain something clear to do, rather than something to avoid. Instead of “Don’t tense your shoulders,” try “Feel how heavy your elbows are,” and notice what changes. Always be truthful, but look for something positive to reinforce. Helping students feel supported is not an optional extra. It is part of good teaching. Jenevora’s Running Commentary is a series of short chats and ideas about singing and teaching singing, named after the place where I do a lot of my thinking: on a run.
