Although Ban Don Makluea is surrounded by sugarcane fields, a major cash crop, the village lives on in its traditional way of life: mulberry cultivation, silkworm raising, and silk weaving, a tradition passed down through centuries of women. Mr. Prasat Chamnan, assistant village headman of Ban Don Makluea, explained that the people here are deeply connected to silk farming, with silk as a legacy. Importantly, every piece of cloth has a story to tell, such as the cloth woven with their mother, the cloth their grandmother wore, the silk sarong they received as a wedding gift, and the silk their mother-in-law tied around their waist to welcome their son-in-law. Currently, mulberry cultivation, silkworm raising, silk reeling, and silk weaving are considered secondary occupations for the elderly, providing additional income. The silk, threads, and pupae from the reels can be sold. However, silkmaking is challenging. Mae Thonglor Chokbandit explained that silkmaking takes time, requiring three meals a day and months of care before being spun into threads for weaving. They must be meticulously protected from insects, especially the mulberry leaves, which the larvae must eat constantly. They work hard because they fear the silkworms will not be satisfied. "We raise silkworms, and silk raises us," she said. "We are connected like this." When they retire, "I couldn't keep up with the mulberry leaves, so I quit." One of the problems faced by the villagers was that none of the daughters and granddaughters of Ban Don Makluea were interested in learning. Fortunately, a grandson named Boss took over the work and excelled, even surpassing the older generation. However, it wasn't easy to prove himself. Boss Kittipot Anankao, a first-year student at Maha Sarakham University, recounted the obstacles he encountered when he first learned to weave. "At that time, I was in Mathayom 3 (Grade 9). No one in my family approved of it. They just complained, scolded, and dissuaded me, because no man in the village had ever woven silk. It was against tradition for men to weave." But Boss persevered. He sought knowledge about silk farming and weaving from his grandmothers, who were all willing to teach him. He was able to weave beautiful pieces of cloth, raise silkworms and reel them well, and tie-dye with speed and precision. This led to his recognition. Boss said that silk and weaving provided him with income to support his family, provided him with a future in education, and brought pride to his family.
